Can I trust that counseling will be confidential?

We are ethically committed to confidentiality and are held to those commitments by federal/state laws. Your attendance in counseling is kept private and confidential at the counseling center.

The law states that there are four exceptions to confidentiality:

  • You may request (through a signed release of information form) that your counselor is authorized to reveal information to other individuals or agencies of your choice;
  • In occurrences where there is impending danger of serious harm to yourself or others, a counselor may reveal information to prevent harm;
  • In cases involving physical and/or sexual abuse of children or disabled/elderly adults, the counselor is mandated to report such abuse;
  • Where requested by subpoena or mandated by court order or state/federal law.
